The Iconic Game Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged the Gap Among Music Generations

Marking 20 years since the legendary game debuted in North America, offering everyday gamers the tools to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing someone who's mastered the epic lengthy instrumental break in front of a packed living-room audience.

Created by the developers, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes moving along the display synchronized to a song. Each riff mimicked specific notes, creating the feel of an authentic live show.

The studio previously tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by Activision during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the groundwork for an unlikely billion-dollar series which made a significant influence on numerous musicians included, introducing decades-old bands to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, remembers the early financial challenges of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when the game took off, album purchases airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they loved. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers the way the game brought classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as music that was past it, however when it was included in the game and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it was cool. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the band's first record was still unreleased stateside, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform for exposure for the group during their a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew had on the song during travel, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and associated lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold well over 500,000 copies in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase significantly during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed dedication among its fans. Recently, a streamer completed an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar gameplay and extensive personalization features. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone performed at increased tempo and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated requiring nine months of practice.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you should use actual weapons and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

DragonForce previously completed a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors informing us that we were selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we were playing just before top acts at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it risked overshadow all other the band has done. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “Previously I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best marketing, be it for cars, clothes or games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “That’s exactly what we were aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a music icon on the stage. Since the beginning, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, featuring spin-offs such as the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus on peripherals waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games like the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene alive, with set to be something from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has begun production on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue with new generations.”
